ItвЂ™s a lot of whimsy crammed into a five-hour runtime. ThereвЂ™s always something new to see or do, so many playful ideas that are introduced and then tossed aside. It may be hard to describe, but Pikuniku is a delight.

YouвЂ™re also able to run into, jump off of, or kick around the other player just to mess with them. ItвЂ™s also utilized in the gameвЂ™s co-op mode, where two players each control an oval with legs (one red, one orange) and work together to navigate a number of puzzle platforming levels. The only time the physics actually comes to the forefront of gameplay is during a one-on-one basketball-like minigame where you try to kick a ball into a basket while preventing the computer opponent from doing it. It goes on just long enough to be awkwardly funny. As they walk uphill, their legs extend to surprising lengths, or do a stutter step when they stop moving. It does an especially good job at animating the beastвЂ™s legs, producing some delightful and silly effects. Instead, itвЂ™s used for things that just feel fun to do: kicking rocks down hills, or knocking villagers off ledges.

The game never takes full advantage of the physics engine for any of the actual platforming or puzzle-solving in the gameвЂ™s single player.

Although I had a lot of fun with Pikuniku, I found it. The real star is the physics engine, which creates an inherent silliness and chaos that attempting to simulate things accurately can bring. When does Pikuniku 2 come out I need a second part, but with much more content and a much larger map. Both of these are necessary skills, allowing you to roll around as an oval or kick rocks and other things around. They donвЂ™t really have a name, but everyone living in the village outside their cave fears them, calling them вЂњthe beast.вЂќ As the beast youвЂ™re able to run and jump around like you might expect, but youвЂ™re also able to kick and tuck your legs in to just be an oval. Pikuniku might not be the most complex game youвЂ™ve ever seen, but its simplicity is inspired.In Pikuniku you control what looks like a red oval with legs. With the press of a button, the red blob punts this spider all the way across the water and forms a sturdy new pathway. In fact, your character canвЂ™t really do much but jump or kick. But they wonвЂ™t spin you a new bridge, because they know itвЂ™s your fault in the first place.ДЄt this point the game hasnвЂ™t introduced many systems for collecting objects or bartering with NPCs. Sure enough, a friendly spider descends to greet you. There isnвЂ™t much to do except poke at a tree on a hill nearby. After backtracking to the downed bridge, you investigate the scene. Nearby townsfolk are furious and wonвЂ™t accommodate you until the bridge is fixed. As you cross it, the bridge collapses into the river below. You could try jumping the entire length of the slim rope, but youвЂ™d fall just short. Along the way, I befriended hilarious creatures, wreaked accidental havoc in a quiet town, and dismantled a capitalist pyramid scheme. But, Pikuniku is far more about the journey than any destination. In promptly ascending back to the surface, I mastered all the mechanics I would need to beat the game. Piku-our round, red hero-wakes up in an underground cavern at the gameвЂ™s opening, watched over by a lonely ghost. This is the kind of game that certainly isnвЂ™t for everyone, but offers a charming, brilliantly clever adventure that I canвЂ™t stop thinking about. Something about the simple pastel colors, the goofy character and his outrageous walking animations, and the entire Microsoft PaintвЂ“inspired art style just immediately clicked. It didnвЂ™t take long for me to realize how much I loved Pikuniku.
